Your contribution via your purchase will benefit New Zealand’s most iconic species by assisting Forest & Bird to protect, care for and reintroduce kiwi all over the country.
Kiwi are in serious decline with about 75,000 left throughout New Zealand. Around 95% of kiwi chicks are killed by introduced predators within the first year of life.
Research shows that in areas that are free from predators, kiwi have a significantly higher chance of survival.
Without the thousands of Forest & Bird volunteers who keep key areas of bush and reserves free from predators and planting and maintaining native habitats there would be no protection for kiwi in these areas.
Forest & Bird spearheaded the formation of kiwi sanctuaries around the country: five sanctuaries cover 43,000 hectares in Northland, Coromandel, central North Island and Westland.
Further action is taking place to secure sanctuaries in Urewera, Taranaki, Whanganui, Nelson, Canterbury, Buller and Rimutaka Forest Park.
Helping kiwi is part of Forest & Bird’s ‘Dawn Chorus’ project which highlights the plight of kiwi throughout New Zealand and actively seeks to increase measures to protect and expand kiwi habitat. |
